Chia sẻ của Thầy William về cái Tết Việt Nam

My first TET Holiday in Vietnam was really fun. Me and a friend went to Mui Ne, Na Trang, and DaNang.  I stayed on my friends  family farm near DaNang and we celebrated traditional TET eating rice cakes, drinking rice wine, playing cards, and eating watermelon seeds. We  gave lucky money to the children and sang songs.
Everyone was excited to see a foreigner and they all asked me to buy them a laptop. Needless to say I didn't buy them all laptops but they were still happy i came to their little farming village.

There was no tapwater or indoor plumbing so  I had to take a bath outside using well water every morning. I would lower the plastic bucket into the ground on a rope about 3 meters deep. Then I would dump the cold water over my head shivering in the cool morning air.

I hope you all had a great one,all the best for 2012.

I spent last night drinking what I suspect was rice spirit in the ally down below with a bunch of damn fine vietnamese lads,The food and the drinks where flowing and the hospitality was second to none.

Peace everyone and all the best for 2012.

  2. Happy New Year to everyone.

I (and my bike) was spending yesterday nigh between 10PM and 1AM getting involuntarily stuck at the corner of Ton Duc Thang and Nguyen Hue. Absolute deadlock, tens (or hundreds?) of thousands of people all standing around with no movements for nearly 3 hours.

  3. I didn’t have chance to travel for my first TET…
TET is cool ! But a kind of tiring when we celebrate it in a big city…

We go shopping, struggling with people, and we buy many things for family and friends.
Then, we have to move around and around… That’s the point.
But, we also visit our families in Vietnam and our friends. It’s great !
Most of people don’t have enough time to visit each other, during the year.
All of them are hardworking. So TET is the perfect occasion for them to gather together.

They eat, drink, sing and play cards. It’s amazing to see how Vietnamese people like playing cards…
Oh ! They like singing as well. They sing a lot, especially karaoke.
I must confess that I’m not a good singer. Therefore, I prefer to stay there, listening to them.

For TET Eve, I remember that we went outside, at night, to buy flowers.
We had to wait 1 hour before to get some flowers.
People rush into streets on that time, to buy flowers and prepare TET.

The party was great. We had a great time in family.

I’m looking forward TET 2012. Maybe I will have chance to travel, this year !

  4. During a normal year I will stay in Vietnam for ten months (March to December) then take an extended break between the end of December (for Christmas and New Year) and February (as it’s my birthday then). For example, in 2009 I used my Tet vacation to travel to the Philippines to learn more about their culture and explore their cities and towns. Last year, however was different and I decided to take advantage of my free time by studying to become a business English teacher, I received my Cert IBET (Certificate in International Business English Teaching) early last year and have taught a large number of business English classes since.

Tet holiday is traditionally all about spending time with your relatives (and lucky money!), so this year I will return to the UK to visit my family as I have not seen them in almost three years. I am very excited to return to the UK but I will leave my heart in Vietnam as I have fallen in love with your country!
